Dogs teach us that life, indeed, is too short to live in regret.
Someone put a puppy in a duffel bag then abandoned her in the woods. The rescuer brought her to a shelter for medical care, where they called her Freya, soon after finding her. Her missing front paws were very noticeable, and there were sores on the nubs.
When Emily held her, she decided then and there that she wanted Freya. She took the puppy home that night for foster care.
Emily bought socks for Freya so as not to aggravate the sores on her nubs. Considering her condition, they wanted to give her a soft space to walk or run on. They laid carpet runners, towels and beds in places where she mostly stayed.
She would move around the house hopping from carpet to bed and down again. She loved to play on the bed because it was so soft.
When her nubs had healed, they let her try the steps for the first time. Freya was brave to mount the stairs even when she seemed hesitant.
Freya loved Emily’s sons. She would cuddle with them on the bed or the couch. She would follow them around as soon as they got home.
Freya would run or play with them, whether inside the house or out in the yard or playground. She loved running, playing fetch, or going up the slides with the boys. Freya had the boundless energy that would last for only about 10 minutes, and then she would lay asleep on her bed, exhausted.
When Emily saw how Freya and her boys got along, she knew that they would fail at fostering. It was a family decision when they officially adopted her. Everyone was happy, but no one was happier than Freya.
Freya’s life is a reminder that there was no point in dwelling on what has happened in the past. We should focus on what is good right here, right now.
