David Foster was on a vacation in Brazil when he spotted what seemed to be a moving shadow across the sand. The dog was so emaciated that he thought it was something else.
She came running up to David and his companions with a wagging tail. She did not show any aggression, instead, she was so happy to see humans as if asking them to help her.
Right then and there, David decided that the dog should not be left alone on that beach. He started calling her Negrita and they boarded her on the boat. He gave Negrita a proper meal and planned to take her to the vet as soon as they reach the city.
However, going to the city took almost five days. David only had a few days left of his vacation, so he had to cancel the rest of his plans. Getting Negrita to a vet was his priority.
Once they arrived at the animal hospital, the vet did a complete check-up. David stayed with Negrita at the hospital because she got clingy. They had formed a bond back on the island that David did not want to leave her alone in the hospital, too.
David wanted to bring Negrita back home with him to the United Kingdom. The process would be lengthy, but David did not mind the wait. He went ahead to his country while Negrita stayed for medical clearances in Brazil.
After five months, David and Negrita were reunited in the U.K. Negrita remembered David, and she was as sweet as ever. David did not know how long Negrita had been alone on that island, but she acted as if this was her first time to play like a regular dog.
Negrita took to David immediately when they first met, but she was not so trusting with anybody else. David had to work on her so that she would feel comfortable being with other dogs. It took a year of training, but she learned how to socialize with others.
David treated Negrita as his friend and companion. Negrita’s devotion to David was her way of showing that she was grateful to him for saving her.
